Boat propeller injures 17-year-old boy on Lake Michigan

A weekend boating outing turned into a water rescue Saturday afternoon along the Lake Michigan shores of Bethany Beach in Chikaming Township.

Around 4:46 p.m., the Berrien County 911 Center received a call about a 17-year-old boy who'd been struck by the propeller of a private vessel.

Officials with the Berrien County Sheriff's Department Marine Division say it appears the teen was attempting to climb back into the boat after tubing when he was cut in the lower left leg.

Paramedics with Medic One transported the victim to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph for treatment. Emergency surgery was not necessary.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in boating accident.
