ELKHART A blind man in Elkhart is speaking out after a nursing home asked him to leave the dining room because of his guide dog.

The Elkhart Truth reports that Steve Girten was visiting a friend for lunch at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A staff member asked them to move to another room because of another resident's dog allergies.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires businesses to allow guide dogs into all areas of their facilities.

The staff eventually apologized and says Girten will be welcomed to the dining room for any future visits.

Girten says he wasn't angry. He just wants to raise awareness about rights for those with disabilities.
