On behalf of the Bethel College board of trustees, Chair Brian L. Hamil announced Gregg Chenoweth, Ph.D., as the seventh president of Bethel College.

The presidential search committee voted unanimously last month, selecting Chenoweth as the finalist. On Saturday, April 6, the Bethel board of trustees unanimously voted to appoint Chenoweth. The general oversight committee of the Missionary Church denomination approved the appointment yesterday, April 8.

“The presidential search committee, with assistance from SIMA Executive Search, did a superb job in conducting a thorough search for the next president of Bethel College,” says Hamil. “Dr. Chenoweth is clearly gifted and prepared for this role, as evidenced by his tremendous success at Olivet Nazarene University and his significant career accomplishments. We believe that he is called by God to be Bethel’s next president.”

“Dr. Gregg Chenoweth is a proven, gifted visionary leader who can be trusted,” says Richard Felix, Ph.D., chair of the presidential search committee. “I am confident that with his hand on the helm, Bethel will navigate the strong headwinds now facing higher education.”

Chenoweth is currently the vice president of academic affairs at Olivet Nazarene University (ONU), a 6,300-student school south of Chicago. He presides over 500 full-time and adjunct faculty, seven accreditations, 75 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs, a dozen international programs, the library, registrar and advising services, academic support staff, four centers (leadership, faith and culture, law and culture, learning development) and athletics.

During his administrative tenure at ONU, Chenoweth led a process involving 700 constituents to articulate institutional values, which became groundwork for college’s decadal strategic plan, established 15 new academic programs, achieved accreditation for 13 distance education degrees, doubled the rate of faculty completing scholarship projects to 74 percent, elevated a macro-measure of academic program competence by 60 percent, and achieved record faculty morale during a time of $3 million in wage freezes and budget cuts. He joined cabinet colleagues in delivering $75 million in capital projects for science, fitness/recreation and chapel.

“As spring bursts forth across Indiana, an excitement about Bethel’s future is growing in Tammy and me, a place where we hope to establish deep roots and achieve great heights,” says Chenoweth. “We honor the work of Dr. Steve and Terri Cramer, who have served their beloved alma mater for many years."

Chenoweth has a B.A. from Olivet Nazarene University and an M.A. from Northern Illinois University. He received his Ph.D. from Wayne State University in 2003.

He has been married for 23 years to his wife, Tammy, who is a former Mishawaka resident and Penn High School graduate. Together they have three children, and look forward to joining the Bethel and Mishawaka communities.

Chenoweth will officially begin his role as president in July.
