He's known as one of the most influential leaders at Notre Dame.

And today, he was honored by some of the most influential politicians from congress.

This afternoon Father Theodore Hesburgh, Notre Dame's President Emeritus, was recognized at a special reception in the U.S. Capitol.

It was held to celebrate his 96th birthday this Saturday and to honor his 70th anniversary as a priest.

The reception was hosted by speaker of the house John Boehner and house democratic leader Nancy Pelosi in the Rayburn Room of the Capitol.

"He is one of the powerful unelected officias this nation has ever seen,” said Vice President Joe Biden.

Both Senator Donnelly and Coats spoke and the U.S. Army band played as part of the celebration.
