BBB warning of new computer scam in Michiana

There are more computer scams in our area, this time targeting people who need help fixing them.

A Michiana woman reported she had been targeted by the scam, so the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to keep an eye out for fishy phone calls. Scammers are calling homes to offer computer-help services.

In one case, an individual said she actually had computer problems, and fell for the scam because she was desperate for assistance, and did not know where to turn

The caller asked for $80 to fix the computer and took her credit card information. After that, the scammer accessed the computer, causing a virus, and a lot higher credit-card bill than originally expected.

“Do not give your credit card number unless you initiate the phone call,” says Dreama Jensen with the BBB. “That's a good thing to remember, if you do not make the phone call you are not the one that went online asking for information. Do not give out any information that you did not initiate"

If you do receive a phone call like this, just hang up right away and call the Better Business Bureau to report the problem.
