Artists compete in annual ice carving competition

Ice carvers faced off Saturday morning to see who could complete the best sculpture in three hours.

With saws in hand, ice sculptors gathered at the seventh annual Ice Carving Festival at Heritage Square. As they chipped away at the blocks of ice, crowds gathered to watch the wintry artists race to the finish.

Some of the carvers say they like getting to know their competitors as they participate year after year.

“Well it’s like being with the family too. The fellow carvers, it’s just like with sports, it’s nice weather, it’s cool enough. And we enjoy the spectators,” said Mike Evans.

The finished ice sculptures had to go in front of the judges at 4 p.m. so that winners could be declared by 4:30 p.m.
