Some Michiana Girl Scouts and their leaders where outside enjoying the sunny day Thursday.
They gathered in the woods at Camp Soni Springs in Three Oaks to break ground on a new multi-purpose center. The camp has been around since 1959 but closed in 2009 because of tougher Michigan codes.
In 2011 they reopened for day camps, and at the end of this summer, they'll have a 5200 square foot building for girls to stay in overnight year round.
The facility will house a kitchen, sleeping quarters, three season porch, trading post, and offices. The Girls Scouts are excited about the new addition.
“The building we are constructing is one that will revitalize the camp, it will become the heart of the camp,” says the Chairman of the Board, Girl Scouts of Indiana-Michigan Tom Edington.
“You get to go year round and also you get to have bunk beds and you get to stay with your friends and it's pretty cool,” Girl Scout Claire Haiker.
Camp Soni Springs has 156 acres of land in Three Oaks.
