Alcohol may have played role in fatal Berrien Township crash

BERRIEN TOWNSHIP Alcohol is believed to have played a role in a fatal Berrien Township car crash this morning.

An unnamed 20-year-old man is facing serious charges after his 19-year-old female passenger died.

The crash happened just before 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of Pucker Street and Smith Road in Berrien Township.

Officers say the man was speeding, lost control, and hit a tree.

Carley Jean Hartman, 19, was a passenger in the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was taken to a local hospital to treat his injuries. He was then arrested.

He faces a charge of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants, causing death.

His identity will be released once formal charges are authorized by the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office.
