An aid worker from southeastern Michigan is one of 21 people who were killed in a Taliban attack on a popular restaurant in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

Basra Hassan was a Somali-American and was working in Afghanistan as a nutrition specialist.

WJBK-TV and WWJ-AM says that Hassan was from the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck. They say the 59-year-old had a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University and joined UNICEF in 2005.

The U.S. Embassy says that Hassan was one of three Americans killed in Friday's attack.

The Taliban say they staged the attack in reprisal for an Afghan military operation earlier in the week against insurgents in Parwan province.
