An emergency situation has been declared after a driver was killed when his truck plunged onto the railroad tracks below the Jasinski Overpass near the Sample and Olive St. intersection on Sunday.
Michael Strantz, 53, was driving east on Sample when his car left the road, went between a guardrail and fence then toppled over the bridge falling over 30 ft.
A memorial to Strantz is now in place there.
The damage is still visible, and St. Joseph County Commissioners have authorized repairs on the overpass.
In the meantime, temporary steps may be taken to repair the sidewalk and fence before permanent repairs are made.
Authorities are looking into the possibility that a medical episode may have caused the crash.
