A Rochester, Indiana native was killed while serving in Iraq.

Details surrounding the death of Army Sgt. Nick Patterson are sketchy. Patterson’s father said he was informed of the death Monday night.

Patterson was a 2001 graduate of Rochester High School, where some on the staff remember him well.

“Nick is one of those guys who had such an outgoing personality, he had so much energy that you had to get to know him,” said Patterson’s former teacher Rob Malchow: “he didn’t allow you not to.”

Patterson was an active duty Army Sgt. In the 82nd Airborne Division assigned to Iraq.

“It doesn’t hit home until you hear Nick Patterson,” said Rochester High School Athletic Director Mark Miller.
“You just sit back and feel so helpless, you’re sad, helpless, tend to get angry about it, wonder why, but it’s just a shame.”

In high school, Patterson was active in sports. His jersey number was 10, on the basketball court and baseball diamond.

“When we heard about all this last night or this morning it was just a big jolt to the community,” said Brian Hooker, Patterson’s former baseball coach.

Just last year a 1979 graduate of Rochester High — Jeff McLochlin —was killed while serving in the National Guard in Afghanistan.

Nick lived 2 houses down from me. His sister graduated with me and we used to hang out. He was a great guy, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Thank you Nick for sacrificing your life for our freedom! Well ALL miss you so much!

I had only met Nick Patterson a couple times, but I did grow up with his wife Jayme. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jayme, Reilly and the entire Patterson family.

I went to high school with Nick. He was a year ahead of me in school (I graduated from Rochester High School in 2002). Nick was a great guy, always smiling and a friend to everyone. Although I hadn't seen Nick since high school, the news hit hard. I'm proud to say that I knew Sgt.Nick Patterson. The community of Rochester lost a friend and a hero...You will truely be missed Nick...my thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I also grew up with Nick and was deeply saddened to hear this terrible news. It's very easy to sometimes forget about all of the brave soldiers who are overseas fighting for our country until something like this strikes so close to home. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family. Nick will be greatly missed.

I grew up with Nick, played basketball with him, I knew him well, and I still cant believe that he's gone. He emailed me about 6 weeks ago expressing how much he missed home, his family, and his friends. I believe he was supposed to come home in November, we were all looking forward to seeing him. Nick was a great guy, somebody that you can be proud to call a friend. We'll all miss very much. My thoughts go out to his wife jayme, his dad Jim, his brother Kyle, and the rest of the family.

I, too, didn't know Nick personally (just by his great reputation), but I went to school with his wife Jayme. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this difficult time. God Bless!

I taught Nick in the 6th grade at Rochester Middle School and announced numerous basketball and football games when he played for RHS. He will always be remembered not only as a great athlete in RHS history, but also for his sportsmanship on the field and off. His great attitude as an athlete obviously extended to his military service for our country. I thank him and all who serve our great country. I am proud to have known Nick and send my condolences to his family and to the Rochester community.
