The city of Elkhart is still warning drivers to look both ways before crossing the train tracks at Sunnyside and Main Street on the city's south side because the signal is not working when a train is coming.

Norfolk Southern has a crew on its way to fix the problem, but it does not yet know when it will be working again.

Be sure to stop and check for a train before the crossing tracks.

mr pines you are wrong on every board you go to. the correct procedure when there is a crossing problem is to notify railroad who will immediately notify crews who will stop and flag protect with a man on the ground the crossing before proceeding. get a clue.

Monica has it absolutely correct. This crossing NEEDS TO BE SHUTDOWN COMPLETELY UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED and NOT put a notice in the newspaper! This is TOTAL LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY ON THE RAILROAD'S PART and the local "gestapo" is going along with it! Let some unsuspecting person go through that intersection and get hit by a train.....see how long it takes the family to file a lawsuit against the city. And guess who is going to have to pay for this if they do??? YOU AND ME!! This is a total NO BRAINER and I believe INDOT needs to be alerted to this fact! It't a flaggrant violation of COMMON SENSE! and SOMEONE is going to be killed or severely injured!

Is there a sign posted to let people know the signal is working? I would hope so!

Let the N/S railroad ploice protect the crossing they work 24/7 or issue a train order to stop and flag the crossing That is where the train stops and the brakeman directs it across once clear But darn that cost the railroads time and money

The CORRECT procedure is NOT put a article on the local newscast but send POLICE to the crossing to flag until the signal is back in service. Then charge the railroads the same five times real cost for the flaggers that railroads charged us for the junk signals to start with.

Just amazing to me!! Why would the city continue to keep the crossing open and warn people?! Closing the intersection completly until it is fixed would be the smartest and safest thing to do! My family went through the crossing earlier today - we assumed it was fixed. There were no warning signs of any kind or road blocks. I still find it mind blowing!!
