Elkhart May Change Smoking Laws Save Email Print

A | A | A

Elkhart may be the next Indiana city to debate a public smoking ban due to a "clean air" committee that has been formed one day after Goshen passed a smoking ban.

Last night, the city council voted 5-to-1 to ban smoking in most businesses, with the exception of bars that goes into effect September first.

The ordinance was pushed by a citizens committee chaired by Richard Pedler.

He told us today, the Elkhart clean air committee will approach the City Council about a possible smoking ban there in weeks to come.

Richard Pedler should butt out. Handwringing busibodies like him are more interested in controlling people than anything else. WNDU would do well to do a little research into the supposed health dangers of second-hand smoke. This is an overblown, emotional issue that is being used to curtail rights of others.

Everyone should have equal rights. Including me. I have asthma and I have the right to breathe clean air. No one is saying you can't smoke, you just can't smoke in public places.

If Elkhart does the same then they have also lost my business as well as South Bend and Goshen have. We all are to have EQUAL RIGHTS. That's how this country was founded. Why keep taking away from us. Stop the crime and drugs. I sure wouldn't want to be a council person up for re election they just might not get re elected. They sure won't get my vote.
