Cut and gravy style foods, made by Toronto based Menu Foods have been blamed for many cases of kidney failure, and the deaths of 16 cats and dogs.

And news of a massive dog and cat food recall is causing concern for pet owners in Michiana!

Vets say kidney failure and disease is common in aging pets.

What's uncommon in the cases linked to these products is how quickly the disease sets in.

“They found crystals that formed in the kidneys, much like anti-freeze, the way it causes crystals to form in the kidneys,” Dr. David Visser of the Roseland Animal Hospital told NewsCenter 16.

Visser says his office has received dozens of calls from concerned pet owners.
His advice: watch for signs of kidney problems.

Your pet may drink and urinate often, vomit, or have a loss of appetite.

“For the past month she’s been eating sometimes and sometimes she'll pass,” pet owner Jenny Goeld said.

She has been feeding her dog, Hayley, Iams wet dog food; one of the 90 recalled brands.
Goeld brought her best friend in today to make sure she's still in the best of health.

“Its really unfortunate and sad, and I know that the food companies this is really not their intention, so I really feel kind of bad for everyone involved.”

Some pet owners north of the border aren't as forgiving.

A Canadian lawyer says he's preparing a class action suit against Menu Foods on behalf of Canadian pet owners whose dogs and cats got sick.

"So far I'm seeing a lot of dead animals in the news, and veterinarians saying, that, you know, there is a direct causal link between ingestion of the food and the death of the animal,” attorney Joel Rachon said.

And the company could be facing legal action from pet owners in the US as well.
The FDA says to expect more deaths related to the recalled food.
