5-year plan helps St. Joseph, Michigan go from good to great

Some would say St. Joseph, Michigan is known for its downtown, mix of shops and scenic views of the lake, but all that doesn't come without work.

The Downtown Development Authority had a meeting Wednesday to discuss its 5-year plan to keep St. Joe up and running.

The meeting was held in the City Commission Chambers in City Hall.
Some of the things they want to change are Main Street as a whole; they want to make it a little more attractive.

They also want continue to add banners along the street, as well as change all of the street lighting.

Another change many businesses are excited for is having better signs to help visitors find all of the shops and attractions in the area

“If you are coming down and you turn left off of Main Street and onto Broad, you have to turn right so this whole block gets missed by a lot of people, and a lot of people if they park down that way they never make it down here unless you are going to go to dinner or lunch at The Buck. So what we are hoping is that there are more clear signs before you hit Broad Street that you can start here, park here, then head down State Street,” says PurelyMichigan Owner, Lynne Christiano.

The DDA also wants to upgrade parking lots, replace and add more trees, and have a shuttle to help people get from the downtown to the beach.

All of this cannot be done without a lot of money.

“Well, when you take a look at the street lights that are about 40 years old, that's about an $800,000 expense, the parking lot upgrades to all of them will be about one million four, so there are some pretty big price tags that go along with this, but it’s all about going from good to great and that’s what this day is all about,” says City Manager, Frank Walsh.

Right now they are presenting these ideas to stake holders, after that they will meet with the City Commission, and then decide which ones take priority and find a way to fund them.
