UPDATE: I&M Power outage caused by squirrel in substation

Approximately 4,300 I&M Power customers were without electricity Monday afternoon after the company experienced a problem at a substation.

In St. Joseph County, 2,982 customers were affected. In Elkhart County, 1,248 lost power. LaPorte County was reporting 104 customers without power.

The outage began at roughly 12:15 p.m.

NewsCenter 16 contacted I&M to learn more about the cause of the outage, and they say a squirrel in a substation caused the malfunction.

Power should be fully restored by 4:00 p.m.
