ST. JOSEPH COUNTY In what promises to be the closest race of the night, the only female member of the St. Joseph County Council survived a primary challenge.

By a margin of just 14 votes, Diana Hess beat her closest challenger, Dan Cruz, for the Democratic nomination in District E.

Hess got 540 votes, Cruz had 526, and another challenger, Carolyn Archie, got 214 votes.

The primary turned out to be a rematch of a very close race that played out last year before Democratic Party officials, to fill the remainder of the term of a councilman who resigned.

"I knew it was going to be a tight race," Hess said afterwards. "I was hoping it wasn't going to be quite this tight, but hopefully the results will stand and I'll continue to serve my constituents on the council."

St. Joseph County Republicans have yet to name a candidate to run in District E in November.
