1st Source Bank secures Riverfest future

The Niles Riverfest will go on as planned in August after 1st Source Bank signed on as a sponsor.

There was some uncertainty about whether the festival would take place this year when the city of Niles denied a $2,500 funding request for the festival.

"I think when the city made their decision that reminded everybody that we needed to step up and start working hard again to make this the festival it has been for 20 years," said Tom Majerek,

Last week organizers received a call from 1st Source indicating their intent to sponsor the event and the announcement was made public on Monday.

"They came to the rescue. Apparently they heard that Niles Riverfest was hurting for funds this year," said Majerek.

Even with the sponsorship, the Riverfest is still in need of other sponsors. Organizers admit they need to do more to ensure the long term success of the event.

"We had been collecting donations for about 20 years and over the last few years had slacked off and stopped pushing for donations and just continued on everybody sending money in again," said Majerek.

The festival will take place as planned August 2- 5 at Riverfront Park in Niles.
