UPDATE: Suspect in custody in connection with South Bend double shooting

Two people were shot on South Bend's west side, in the 400 block of South Edison.

Freddie Smith, 29, was shot at least once and died at the scene, according to St. Joseph County Metro Homicide.

A second person was also shot but is expected to survive her injuries.

Metro Homicide tells Newscenter 16 that the female victim, Diana Pereira, is believed to have been present during an argument between Smith and the shooter. Pereira suffered injuries to her lower extremities, according to investigators. Officials also said that Pereira is the suspect's girlfriend.

Authorities took an individual into custody at the scene. Steven Knobles, 24, faces preliminary charges of reckless homicide.

An autopsy will likely take place Friday.

Metro Homicide is working to get a search warrant for the home on Edison.
