One person is dead after being hit by a car in Van Buren County.
It happened just after midnight on 68th Street, a half mile south of County Road 388 in Geneva Township.
18-year-old Ayala Shulman of Chicago was walking in the road near the center line when she was hit by 18-year-old Charles Carrigan of Kalamazoo.
Investigators say Carrigan was using his GPS when he swerved to miss another pedestrian walking along the side of the road with Shulman.
Carrigan told police he was going 35-40 mph in an unmarked 55 mph zone. Reconstructionists confirmed Carrigan was traveling around 39 miles per hour at the time. There was also patchy fog, and no street lamps on the road. Shulman was also wearing black clothing.
A witness told police he saw two females walking south on the road in the southbound lane. He said as he approached them and Carrigan's car, Shulman jumped out of the southbound lane, into his lane and back into the southbound lane where she was struck.
Shulman was taken to South Haven Community Hospital and then flown to Bronson Methodist Hospital where she died.
Police say alcohol was not a factor.
