SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- NewsCenter 16 was busy Saturday morning collecting school supplies for students in our area.

The 16 Pack-A-Backpack started off with a bang this morning when Paqui Kelly and the Kelly Cares Foundation donated $10,000 to help purchase school supplies.

We have also heard from Senator Joe Donnelly on why he enjoys coming out to support the Pack-A-Backpack drive.

"Our kids education is basically the foundation for everything, and so to have a new backpack, to have new supplies, it makes them feel good, it makes them excited about going back to school," said Senator Donnelly.

Rick Zeef, Store Director of the Mishawaka Meijer store on Bremen Highway, talked about how Pack-A-Backpack really does impact students.

"It's about sending the kids off to school correctly," said Zeef.

Meijer donations value $5,000 each year.

Dave Sparks and area McDonald's gave $3,000 that was collected by 49 area McDonald's during the last month.

And we met up with the Notre Dame Credit Union, who was able to raise over $6,300 for 16 Pack-A-Backpack!

NewsCenter 16 would like to thank all of the businesses and individuals that supported this drive, and really made it a success.

A special thanks to the Mishawaka Volleyball team who helped pack boxes in front of our studios in South Bend.
