Unhappy with the way his offense performed last season, Brian Kelly has made major changes to coaching staff on that side of the ball.

Not a single position coach will return in the same role next season.

Former safeties coach Chuck Martin moves into the role of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Martin, the former head coach at Grand Valley State, knows the Kelly system well and Kelly says the transition will be very easy. Kelly will continue to call plays from the field.

Martin will also give up his role as recruiting coordinator. That position goes to Tony Alford, who will move from wide receivers coach back to running backs coach. Alford will also coach the slot receivers.

Mike Denbrock will take the role of outside wide receivers coach as well as passing game coordinator.

Taking over Denbrock's duties as tight ends coach is former intern Scott Booker, who will also serve as Special Team Coordinator. Kelly did say it will be a team effort on special teams, which struggled greatly this past season.

The completely new faces on the offensive side of the ball is offensive line coach and run game coordinator Harry Hiestand. Hiestand previously coached at University of Tennessee and before that with the Chicago Bears.

Kelly's need to make changes began thanks to the departure of Charley Molnar (now head coach at UMass), Ed Warinner and Tim Hinton (both to Ohio State as assistant coaches).

While the major changes happened on offense, Kelly kept the movement on the defensive side of the ball to a minimum thanks to the success that unit had last year.

Bob Diaco remains defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He also adds the title of Assistant head coach.

Kerry Cooks adds the title of Co-Defensive Coordinator in addition to his returning duties of cornerbacks coach.

The new coach on defense will be Bob Elliott, who will take Martin's role coaching safeties. Elliott previously worked at Iowa State and coached Cooks when Kerry played at Iowa. Diaco was also a graduate assistant under Elliott.

Mike Elston will now focus completely on being the defensive line coach, losing his title as Special Teams Coordinator.

Josh Reardon will serve as Graduate Assistant for Defense and Pat Welsh Graduate Assistant for Offense. David Grimes is the defensive intern and Bill Brechin is the offensive intern.
