Oh recruiting.
You could here the groaning on social media sites over the last few weeks from the the most dedicated Irish fans who follow football recruiting like 16-year-old girls track the Kardashians.
The loss of 4-star recruits Ronald Darby and Taylor Decker have left those recruiting crazies becoming just that over the latest Irish class, which will become official on National Signing Day on February 1st.
Monday--the insanity went up a few notches and suddenly in a blink of an eye--Brian Kelly may be viewed as a savior again as opposed to what some of those dedicated fans had been thinking of him with the recent de-commits.
Why? Gunner Kiel.
The nation's top quarterback prospect is apparently not going to LSU anymore and will end up at Notre Dame.
After eight hours of speculation, jokes and maybe truths on messages boards and twitter, came some huge news from Notre Dame's Student Newspaper.
"A Notre Dame staff member has confirmed to The Observer that Kiel is expected to be living in O'Neil Hall by the end of the week," Douglas Farmer wroted in an article posted on The Observer website around 1am Tuesday. "The staff member remained anonymous because the staff member was not authorized to discuss specific students and their enrollments."
Of course, until Kiel actually attends a class this could all change again. Notre Dame begins classes on Tuesday and Kiel has up to a week following the start of classes to enroll.
He has intended all along to enroll early at whatever college he chose in order to have the opportunity to compete in the fall for the starting job.
Some on twitter and message boards spent Monday claiming Kiel and his family were on campus and Kiel's already moved into a dorm at ND. One poster put things in perspective on the validity of those statements, "My mom is in Germany and reports that Kiel is in a town in Northern Germany not far from Denmark."
There you go. Maybe he'll play for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the old World League.
Here's how the chaos began.
Kiel, of Columbus East High School outside of Indianapolis, originally committed to Indiana last year. After the Hoosiers early season struggles under 1st year coach Kevin Wilson, Kiel de-committed and re-opened the process.
Just after Christmas, he picked LSU over Notre Dame and Vanderbilt.
Then on Monday, it all blew up again.
Mike Farrell, the national recruiting analyst for rivals.com, tweeted Monday afternoon that two sources said Kiel was no longer planning to attend LSU and that Notre Dame was the place. Less than an hour later, Farrell tweeted that another source close to LSU said Kiel would still end up with the Tigers.
Farrell himself said the whole thing was insane.
That's probably the most factual thing coming out of Monday.
Tuesday---a whole new day--and within the first hour--comes the latest twist thanks to the Observer.
Gunner Kiel is Irish.... we think.
