The U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments today in one of the first cases of someone prosecuted under the Stolen Valor Act.

A federal appeals court in San Francisco struck down the 2006 law, which is aimed at curbing false claims of military valor. That court called it an unconstitutional restraint on free speech. Last month, however, an appeals court in Denver upheld the law, saying
the First Amendment does not always protect false statements.

Lawyers for the man at the center of the high court's case say
their client, who claimed to have been awarded the Medal of Honor,
sometimes has trouble telling the truth. But they say his lies harmed no one and shouldn't be considered fraud.

Supporters say such false claims are fraud.

Today is the birthday of Gen. George Washington, who established the U.S. military awards system.
