The Irish baseball team met the South Bend Silver Hawks at the Cove Wednesday night for the first ever “Battle of the Bend.”

Former Notre Dame player, and current Silver Hawks owner Joe Kernan suited up for the game.
Kernan signed a dollar contract for the exhibition, and played second base for two innings.

At 61 the former governor, was the oldest player on the roster, but that didn’t make him the least fearsome!

“Well, we’ve been evaluating his skills and putting the pressure on him at batting practice. He’s got to be able to go the other way a little bit better than he was,” Silver Hawks manager Mark Haley says of the latest addition to his team.

“I called mark Haley, said ‘we’re not coming. You’re signing ringers for the game today!” Dave Schrage, Notre Dame coach, said.

The Silverhawks won the battle 5-3.

The Silver Hawks season officially opens at the cove Thursday night.
