NewsCenter 16 is counting down to the National Championship game by re-living each game of the 2012 Notre Dame Football Season. Each sportscast until the New Year, will look back at a game from the season with extended highlights, storylines and postgame reaction.

The last game of Notre Dame’s regular season was against its rival USC at the Coliseum.

On several occasions a Notre Dame team has gone to southern California only to return with a loss, but not the 2012 team. The trip to the Los Angeles turned out to make a perfect 12-0 season for the Irish.

Theo Riddick rushed for 146 yards and the only touchdown in the 22-13 scoring game.

Notre Dame was up nine in the 4th quarter when USC drove down inside the Notre Dame 5 and had a 1st and goal at the 2. Instead of getting the touchdown, the Trojans turned it over on downs as Notre Dame made another goal line stand.

Kyle Brindza showed fans what he’s capable of, kicking a 52-yard field goal to help clinch the Irish’s victory over the Trojans and giving the team something to celebrate.

“It was a great feeling. Knowing that everything you worked for in spring ball, everything you worked for in summer camp it really proved itself to be true” said Irish quarterback Everett Golson after the game.

Manti Te’o had his eyes set on the biggest prize in college football, the BCS championship, “We had a dream and we put in the work to make sure that dream comes true. You have to go to work and make sure we prepare ourselves for the national championship.”

The victory was Coach Kelly’s second against USC at the Coliseum and sent the Irish to the national championship game on January 7th again soon to be announced Alabama.
