Rally honors Mishawaka Cavemen as state runners-up

The Irish weren't the only local team in the spotlight this weekend. For the first time in nearly forty years, the Mishawaka Cavemen played for a state title.

While they didn't bring home the top prize, the school and the community are proud of their state runner-ups.

They held a pep rally for the team Monday morning to welcome them back.

Mishawaka lost to Cathedral 29- 56 on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
“Obviously we wanted to send those kids out with a win and that didn't happen,” said Coach Bart Curtis. “But we have a lot of great memories and second best in the state of Indiana is not what we wanted to be but I'm telling you there was a time in August when I think second best might have been something to really celebrate, and that's what we're doing today.”
“We played with such heart all year and the team chemistry was unbelievable,” said Sam Schrader Mishawaka Senior Quarterback. “We went out and battled for each other, our brothers, every game. It wasn't about individual goals, it was about winning as a team.”

Schrader was awarded the Phil Eskew Mental Attitude Award in class 4a football.

The three-year starting quarterback also is a 4.1 GPA student in the classroom and is involved a number of community activities.
