National Championship Trophy in Michiana

The BCS National Championship Coaches’ Trophy makes an appearance in South Bend on Thursday, before it’s awarded to the 2012 championship winners.

The trophy travels all year, visiting schools in the running to win at the end of the season. Though it's the first time the trophy has been in South Bend this year, the Irish have seen it at two road games.

The trophy presentations began in 1986, presented by the American Football Coaches Association.

The crystal trophy is valued at $30,000 and takes three months to produce. While it's steeped in prestigious football tradition, each school's award is unique and handmade.

The Irish could claim this year’s design in just two short months.

"It’s [in South Bend] because Notre Dame is number three in the BCS right now,” Coaches’ Trophy manager Ryan Kasmiersky says. “With a couple more wins and the right team to lose, they'll be running pretty hard for this trophy and the right to be national champions."

The Coaches’ Trophy presented by Dr. Pepper will be awarded following the championship game January 7.

Michiana can view the trophy at two Wal-Mart locations on November 15.
