Students make Thanksgiving baskets for needy families

Experts estimate the cost of feed a family of ten for Thanksgiving is right under 50 dollars, and not everyone can afford an extravagant feast.

Students at Holy Cross College and the St. Vincent DePaul Society of South Bend selected 59 families to help this year.

Students learned more than just what goes into a Thanksgiving meal. Claire Doriot a sophomore at Holy Cross College said, “It's made me appreciate all the food we have on our table on thanksgiving. You never realize how many families don't really have that food coming and how many need some money, need some help to have that feast.

The baskets were packed of Thanksgiving goods from the centerpiece of the meal, the turkey, to the finishing touch of pumpkin pie.

Students raised over $4,000 to make the baskets, and turned to Martin’s Supermarkets to shop for the food.
