The final home game brings a bittersweet feeling for Fighting Irish seniors. While these veteran players take the field for the last time, another type of veteran will also be honored.

Notre Dame is also paying tribute to the men and women who have served the country.

A special guest took the stage at Friday's football luncheon to kick off the military recognition weekend.

Dot Sheehan founded "Operation Hat Trick" which aims to raise funds for wounded warriors.

"I heard a radio broadcast and it was asking what is the one thing head wounded warriors coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan want the most and it was a baseball cap," Sheehan said. "And, it just struck me like that should be so easy to do."

Now, dozens of schools have joined in on the effort. Hats featuring the Notre Dame emblem, along with the Operation Hat Trick logo, were on display at the luncheon. Ten percent of all hat sales go to the VA General Post Fund.

The Irish hats will be on sale at the Hammes Bookstore and Varsity Shops at Purcell Pavilion.
