Local residents have connections in high places – all the way up in space.

The names of several Winamac Boy Scouts are on a microchip aboard the Mars Curiosity Rover, which landed on Mars on Monday.

The scouts were part of a program in 2009, sponsored by NASA and the United Nations, among others. Their names were put on the rover as part of that program.

Additionally, two Purdue University alumni and a professor were part of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Mission. They helped design the parachute decelerator for the rover.
