Police are investigating after a five-year-old girl was found dead in an Elkhart County home.

Around 9:05 a.m. Sunday, officials were called to 59983 County Road 1 near the intersection of County Road 26 and County Road 1 in Baugo Township. Inside they found Amber Mitchel unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics were not able to resuscitate her.

According to the Mitchel's foster family, the youngster had a longstanding medical condition which they believe caused her death.

Police are unable to rule out foul play until the Elkhart County Coroner's Office performs its autopsy on Tuesday.
