City of South Bend cuts down Eddy St. trees, upsets homeowners
A neighborhood is up in arms as the City of South Bend cuts down dozens of trees as part of a sewer separation project.
Between Eddy Street and the river, trees along Washington are being cut down so the city can separate the storm water from the combined sewer system and also re-do the curbs.
Residents agree it is a project that needs to be done, but they say the project can be done without killing the trees.
The city has given home owners on the north side of the street the option of keeping their trees, but if the roots are damaged and the tree later dies, removing it will then be the home owner’s responsibility.
Homeowners on the south side of the street are not being given an option since that is the side where the line has to go. Those trees will be cut down.
The city plans on planting two trees for every one that is cut down.
The neighborhood association is holding a meeting to discuss the project. It will be at 6:00 p.m. on May 21st at Zion United Church and Christ. Those residents on the north side of the street wanting to keep their trees are encouraged call 282-8001.
