Fireworks show will go on at the Cove

It could be a Fourth of July without fireworks for many communities in the West and Midwest this year.

Drought conditions and wildfire worries have prompted state and local governments, including some in Michiana, to cancel popular fireworks displays. But the show will go on in downtown South Bend at Coveleski Stadium and the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair.

The Silver Hawks are hosting a three-night "fireworks spectacular" that's scheduled to kick off at the ballpark on Sunday.

Team President Joe Hart says the shows will be nearly twice as long as their traditional Friday night fireworks displays, but assures fans that they've taken extra precautions to make sure everyone stays safe.

"We have had the fire department out here every Friday whether there was a burn ban or not, so we obviously want to make sure we're taking the precautions necessary,” Hart said. “We're all set to go, and we're excited about it."

The fireworks will be set off at the Cove following games Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

"We wanted to make it a big celebration with all of the improvements at the Cove and the big holiday coming up,” Hart added. “We figured, let's treat South Bend to a great party."

Also, the fireworks display at the St. Joseph County 4-H fair will take place Sunday night.
