Farmers wish for more rain, get by on strong relationships

Friday night's rain brought some relief to Michiana after weeks of dry conditions, but was it enough to help our farmers?

The outlook was cloudy at the South Bend Farmer’s Market Saturday morning.

Most farmers said, although it was good to see rainfall, it was not significant enough to make up for the weeks of dry weather.

On the plus side, their loyal customers come out to the market rain or shine, and it's that kind of relationship that keeps them going strong.

“People from different parts of the country come here, people from my home state in upstate New York,” said Art Walawender as he manned his post at the market. “I just enjoy talking to people, period. If I can help them in any way—I do get inquiries like, ‘How do I get my tomatoes to grow well? My beets?’”

Farmers also said this year's up-and-down weather could even have an impact on next year's crops.
