St. Joseph County Metro Homicide is investigating an early morning shooting on South Bend's northwest side.
Investigators say David Middleton, 30, of South Bend, was shot around 5 a.m. Saturday in the 800-block of N. Adams Street.
In attempt to flee from his assailants, Middleton sped off in a black Toyota sedan. His getaway ended about a mile down the road at the corner of N. Adams and Hamilton Streets.
According to police, Middleton jumped a curb in the 1700-block of Hamilton where he plowed through a front lawn, struck a gas meter, hit a parked car and crashed through a chain-linked fence before coming to a stop inside a detached garage.
The commotion woke neighbors who dialed 911 upon finding the victim bleeding profusely inside his car.
Commander Tim Corbett with Metro Homicide tells NewsCenter 16, Middleton is in "very critical condition" at a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
