South Bend celebrates Workers' Memorial Day Friday
Saturday is Workers' Memorial Day, and Friday afternoon in South Bend, the Local AFL-CIO remembered six people from the region who lost their lives on the job in 2011.
The ceremony was held at the Howard Park Workers Memorial, and coincides with the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act back in 1970.
Local Labor Chief Tony Flora opened the ceremony with this interesting fact. Just a century ago, 12 people died building the titanic, and they were written off as a cost of business.
Tony Flora, President, N. Central IN AFL-CIO, explains the steps workers took to get the rights they have today, "We went from a world where people didn't even believe that they had a right to workplace safety to now, where it's an assumed, and a given. And we're proud to say that the labor movement was a force that helped bring that about"
Awards were also presented to the cities of Elkhart, Mishawaka and South Bend for their superior workplace safety programs.
Flora, who’s own grandfather died on the job as a bricklayer, reminded guests that in Indiana alone, 2 people die on the job every week.
