Families cool off in Lake Michigan

Families cool off in Lake Michigan

With temperatures hitting the 90s Sunday, hundreds of Michiana families decided to take a break from the heat by taking a dip in Lake Michigan.

"Going in the water is really refreshing today because of the heat," said South Bend resident Rachael Hammett.

Hammett and her family decided to head to Silver Beach in St. Joseph after church on Sunday for a day of fun in the sun.

They spent time splashing around the water and lounging on the sand.

But even taking a dip in Lake Michigan's cool waters isn't enough on a hot summer day.

"I go in the water and then when the water gets too cold I come sit under my tent," said Cassopolis resident Justin Smith. "And then I get some juice or something."

The American Red Cross says people should drink non-alcoholic, caffeine-free beverages continuously to avoid heat illnesses.

The Red Cross also recommends eating several small meals on hot days.

"We've got cold water," Hammett said. "We picked strawberries this weekend so we have cold strawberries and fresh fruit in our cooler."

Sunday was an Ozone Action day in much of Michiana. People with respiratory illnesses should limit their outdoor exposure to avoid breathing problems on Ozone Action days.
