Michiana residents walk for AIDS awareness

Every nine and a half minutes someone in the United States is infected with HIV, and today members of the Michiana community helped raise awareness for the deadly disease.

More than 100 people came out to Mishawaka’s 100 Center for the 13th annual Michiana AIDS Walk.

St. Joseph County has the third highest rate of HIV cases in the state, but with the advancement of treatment and being educated, HIV is not the disease it once was.

“We really need to focus on HIV here at home” said Latorya Greene. “A lot of times we hear about what is going on with HIV globally but not really so much locally and so we just want to bring that perspective back here at home.”

Organizers expected to raise more than $25,000 from today’s walk, and all of that money will stay in the community.
