Reporter: Associated Press

Authorities have identified the man fatally shot during a struggle with an Indiana State Police trooper.

The Allen County coroner's office identifies the victim as 33-year-old Lucius D. Washington.

State police spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz says the shooting occurred early Friday near downtown Fort Wayne after the trooper saw a fight involving several people and stopped to intervene. Galaviz says Washington started to leave the scene and the trooper followed him. A struggle ensued in which the trooper's gun discharged.

The trooper suffered scrapes, cuts and bruises but did not require hospitalization.

The trooper has not been identified. Galaviz says he has more than four years of experience. He's been placed on administrative leave, as policy dictates.

The Journal Gazette reports Washington was convicted of cocaine possession and domestic battery.
