Good vibrations at the dentist office

Hate going to the dentist? You're not alone.

50 percent of all Americans say they dread going. The biggest reason is the painful injections. Now there's a new device that's giving patients good vibrations.

In Little Shop of Horrors, Sadistic Dentist Doctor Farb inflicts pain on his patients. No wonder half of all patients say they dread seeing the dentist.

Pediatric Dentist Dr. Jane Soxman says, "If I tell a parent a child is going to need a filling or restoration, the first question thing that they ask me is, 'is he or she going to need the shot?'"

Now a new hand-held tool is taking the sting out of the shot and sending good vibes your way.

The DentalVibe looks and sounds a lot like an electric toothbrush. Its tip has two prongs that vibrate your gums, while a space in-between them allows your dentist to inject anesthetic.

The vibration reaches the brain before the pain sensation does, blocking the patient's brain from feeling the injection.

Product Development Specialist with The BresslerGroup Andrew Weiman says, "The vibration is going on both sides of that needle stick, so you're preventing the signal from getting out."

No pain, just good vibrations.

Use of the DentalVibe is not limited to pediatric patients- dentists report pain-free visits for their adult patients, as well.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR GUMS: You can keep your teeth and gums healthy. Most problems with teeth and gums can be prevented by taking these steps:
* Brush your teeth 2 times a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss between your teeth every day.
* Visit a dentist regularly for checkups and cleaning.
* Cut down on sugary foods and drinks.
* Don't smoke or chew tobacco.
* If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

WATCH OUT FOR PLAQUE: Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on your teeth. When plaque stays on your teeth too long, it can lead to tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease. Tooth decay and gum disease are the main causes of tooth loss. ( Source: Healthfinder.gov)

FEEL THE VIBRATION: DentalVibe is a handheld, easy-to-use device designed to reduce the pain and fear associated with the dental injection for adults as well as children. DentalVibe can be used with any dental anesthetic injection syringe to deliver comfortable injections in all areas of the mouth. It is especially useful for kid dental services. DentalVibe can be used for labial and buccal infiltration injections, palatal injections and mandibular block or inferior alveolar injections.
It delivers unique soothing pulsed vibration to block pain and discomfort of dental shots. The micro-sonic oscillations of DentalVibe's comfort tips are pulsed in a controlled synchronized wave pattern. Along with an enhanced amplitude, VibraPulse Technology sends a soothing percussive, or tapping stimulation deep into the oral mucosa, gently exciting the submucosal sensory nerve endings. Because the sensation of vibration travels along thick myelinated A-beta nerve fibers twice as fast as the pain sensation does, which travels along thin unmyelinated C fibers, a gating mechanism is closed and the pain sensation never reaches the brain. It is this pulsed re-stimulation that maintains a closure of the gate, blocking the pain of an injection. ( Source: Dentalvibe)
