Tuberculosis, a Lifesaver?

We all know tuberculosis can be a deadly respiratory disease, but did you know a form of it can actually be a life saver?

A member of the TB family is one of the most proven and effective therapies for bladder cancer.

The TB relative is called BCG. It is a micro bacterium that is similar to TB, but it is not the ordinary tuberculosis organism.

It is used to treat transitional cell bladder cancer.

“It stimulates the local immunity inside the bladder and that helps the bladder to fight the cancer cells. It actually decreases the chances of bladder cancer from recurring,” explains Urologist Dr. Amr Fergany.

There are some dangers to BCG. Preparing the mixture requires safety precautions, including a mask, gloves and using a biohazard bag.

A patient holds it in their bladder for two hours before using the restroom.

There are some mild side effects, but the treatment is a lifesaver for bladder cancer patients.
