Extreme Medical Makeover Part III

For the last six months NewsCenter 16 has been following a team of area doctors who offered an Extreme Medical Makeover to a lucky Michiana woman, a makeover worth 60,000 dollars.

Cathy Mathews was chosen from roughly two hundred people who showed up a University Park Mall last may for a chance to win the extreme makeover.

The doctors were not looking for someone with minor imperfections.

Their goal was to help someone whose appearance affected their everyday life.

We will fast forward through the changes Cathy Matthews has made so far.

First she had a Micropeel to refresh her skin.

Then doctor Daniel Danahey performed Rhinoplasty to change the shape of Cathy's nose.

And Dr. Richard Weiss performed Lasik Eye Surgery.

For the first time since first grade, Cathy does not need glasses.

Cathy has more surgery ahead, but first doctors want her to have a Chemical peel.

It will help with fine lines and pigment changes which are pretty commonplace for 50 year old women. ”We're going to be doing is a chemical peel and we went ahead and cleaned and prepped your skin.”

Dr. Danahey says Cathy's skin will continue to improve over the next several months.

Her next big procedure is an eyelift.
“In the past, she was able to use eye shadow. Over the past few years, she has noticed that it is more difficult to see eye shadow after she applies it,” Dr. Danahey says. “It is basically reshaping the upper eye lids.”

“We make our incision in that natural crease so that after surgery is over and you heal it is hard to see that you have a scar because it is well camouflaged in that crease.”

There seems to be a lot of blood, but Dr. Danahey was actually able to perform this surgery in his office, with a numbing medicine.

Cathy was awake and talking the whole time.

With both eyes done, Cathy is bandaged up and will have her stitches for about a week.

Cathy's next procedure is the one she wanted most of all.

“When I went to apply for jobs before, it's like I felt like I couldn't go to a classier place, or a place where I had to be out of the public. It made me nervous when I applied and they'd see my teeth,” she says.

Enter Dr. Jeffrey Mader.

The South Bend dentist, who a year before performed a makeover for the Tony Danza Show, wanted to give Cathy a mouth to truly smile about.

“Today we are starting Catherine's cosmetic dental process. We are going to be shaping her teeth for porcelain veneer. A porcelain veneer is an ultra thin coating of porcelain that is made to cover the front of the tooth and it masks any imperfections of the tooth,” Dr. Mader says. “She does need some basic dentistry, and I know Catherine hasn't been to a dentist in a while. We are going to pick up where she last left off.”

The veneers will mean two trips to Dr. Mader's office, but it will be worth her dazzling new smile.

The last of Cathy's procedures before the big reveal?

She's getting botox.

Cathy also gets another injection, called restalyne.

“It's natural for us to have a little fold, but as we age those folds just from smiling and talking and eating and animation ten to get a little bit deeper as time goes on,” Dr. Danahey says.

This was was time that for our viewers went by in a matter of minutes, but for Cathy and her team of makeover doctors, a very busy six months.

On NewsCenter 16 at 11pm on Thanksgiving Eve, we will have Cathy’s big reveal.
