Married couples constantly complain of their spouses snoring, some even banish them to the spare bedroom.
Some couples spend the first year of their marriage struggling to sleep.
Snoring can be a symptom of a greater problem, sleep apnea.
One doctor is studying the affect of sleep apnea, and lack of sleep, on marriages.
Ten couples were studied. They were hooked up to electrodes, to measure their sleeping and breathing.
"The wives turned out to be sleepy as well because of the amount of disruption of their sleep, and that was a surprise," explains Dr. Rosalind Cartwright, of Rush University, Chicago.
The solution was a sleep mask, known as C-Pap.
It helped the husbands breathe easier and that meant their wives slept better.
The best long-term solution for sleep apnea is losing weight, sleeping on your side, not smoking and cutting back on alcohol intake.
