Parts of the brain that drive people to overeat are the same pathways that cause addicts to crave drugs.
Researchers studied obese patients who had an implantable gastric stimulator, which is a device that sends fullness messages to the brain.
By using brain scans, they measured activity when the device was on and off.
They found regions activated by the stimulator were the same areas used by drug addicts when they crave drugs.
Areas of the brain involved in over-eating also have ties to emotion and memory.
This suggests a brain connection between obese patients eating to soothe emotions.
