Women now have a new option in birth control.

The new generation hormonal implant has been widely used outside of the U.S. and was just FDA approved.

Doctors believe a new method called Implanon is both safe and effective.

It’s a single rod, about the size of a matchstick, which contains the hormone, Progestin.

It’s implanted, and over a three-year period, the hormone is dissolved inside the material.

The rod is implanted right under the skin in less than a minute.

Dr. Pablo Rodriguez said, "We numb the area where the needle is going to go to. We don't have to cut anything because it's like putting an intravenous, like an I-V."

Implanon can also come out almost as easily as it went in.

That’s what makes this birth control option attractive.

Doctors say a couple of days after removing the implant; you will resume your normal hormonal environment and fertility returns immediately, but this implant isn't for everyone.

There are side effects, including more spotting and irregular bleeding during menstrual periods.
