Suffering from depression? You may find relief from an unlikely source: nicotine.
A Duke University study found that using a nicotine patch improved symptoms of depression in non-smokers.
Researchers are quick to point out that people with depression should not start smoking or use a patch, because of the obvious and well-documented hazards of tobacco and nicotine.
But the findings suggest nicotine could someday be scientifically modified to remove the addictive effects, while maintaining its ability to alter mood.
