Legislation that would allow more "cyber" or online charter schools in Michigan has cleared a Republican-led House committee.
The House Education Committee approved a bill Wednesday by a 10-8, mostly party line vote that would lift the cap on the number of cyber charters allowed in the state. The bill advances to the House floor.
The Senate already has approved a version of the bill.
Michigan now allows two cyber charter schools, with a combined enrollment of roughly 1,400 students this year. Supporters of expansion say the state's cyber charter schools have long waiting lists and parents want more educational choice.
Democrats opposing the bill say there is not enough data to support lifting the cap on the number of cyber schools.
