Two popular winter events that were scheduled for this weekend have been canceled because there's too little snow.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that the White Pine Stampede cross-country ski race was called off for the first time in its more than 30-year history. The Antrim County event usually draws 500 to 600 skiers.
Also canceled was the Mackinaw Mush dog sled race in Mackinaw
City.
Temperatures reached the upper 40s and even 50s in northern
Michigan this week.
Even so, the season isn't a total loss. The Women's Winter Tour,
a skiing and snowshoeing event at Crystal Mountain resort near Thompsonville, is taking place as scheduled this weekend.
Organizers say the North American Vasa ski race near Traverse
City is still on for now. It's scheduled for Feb. 11.
