Furlough days canceled for Michigan state workers

A projected budget surplus means an estimated 37,000 state of Michigan workers represented by unions won't have to take furlough days this fiscal year.

A projected budget surplus means an estimated 37,000 state of Michigan workers represented by unions won't have to take furlough days this fiscal year.

The unionized workers had been expected to take up to four furlough days each in the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30. The furlough days were announced last fall because unions did not reach an agreement on concessions with Gov. Rick Snyder's administration.

But the state has a $457 million budget surplus from the last fiscal year that wasn't expected. State budget office spokesman Kurt Weiss says Wednesday that employees have not yet taken furlough days this fiscal year and they won't be required to take them.

Snyder is scheduled to detail his budget plan for the next fiscal year Thursday.
